Timon of Athens: A Theatrical Reading with the Shakespeare Project of Chicago

Register

In this dark Shakespeare play, Timon’s open-handed generosity leads him to poverty and misery.

This program will be held in-person at the Newberry.

"Every man has his fault, and honesty is his."

What happens when a wealthy man gives away his fortune to his friends? How will his friends reciprocate in his time of need? Timon, a noble Athenian learns the hard way that money can't buy loyalty. The Shakespeare Project of Chicago presents William Shakespeare's Timon of Athens, a gripping drama of betrayal, madness, and revenge. Don't miss this rare opportunity to see one of the Bard's most overlooked plays.

In this theatrical reading, professional actors from the Shakespeare Project of Chicago will bring Timon of Athens to life in a performance directed by associate artistic director Michelle Shupe. A dramaturg's introduction to the play begins 15 minutes prior to curtain.

Founded in 1993, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago has performed at the Newberry since 2003. This reading will be preceded by an informative talk by a dramaturg and followed by a question-and-answer talkback with the director and cast.
