Seminar Description

In 1933, thousands from all over the country flocked to Chicago for the World’s Fair. One of the most popular attractions was Sally Rand’s infamous fan dance. Sally Rand and her fans are credited with saving the fair and the city from financial ruin during the Great Depression. This team-taught seminar will explore Sally Rand as a cultural and feminist icon and the history of vaudeville and burlesque in Chicago in the early 20th century.

Katrina Kemble is an adjunct professor at Columbia College Chicago and Loyola University. She has studied dance and performance in Chicago.

Rachel Alina Michaels has taught writing and cultural studies courses in Chicago, New York, and London. She now teaches adult education courses at the City Colleges.
