Class Description
Maeve Binchy is one of the most popular and widely loved Irish writers of novels and stories. In this class, we will discuss one of her best later novels, Heart and Soul (2009), which focuses on Dr Clara Casey's efforts to start, staff, and lead a new heart clinic in Dublin.
In other class meetings, we will discuss about twenty of her best short stories, illustrating a variety of characters and sensitive portraits of life in contemporary Ireland. The stories will be drawn from two of her best collections: Chestnut Street and A Few of the Girls.
Joseph Heininger is a Professor of English at Dominican University in River Forest, IL. His interests include modern and contemporary Irish and British fiction, drama, and poetry. He is currently writing a book about Seamus Heaney and translation.
