Seminar Description
First established in the early 19th century as a cemetery, Lincoln Park evolved into one of Chicago’s largest, loveliest, and most active public parks. The park was created by a group of talented landscape designers, architects, and artists that included Swain Nelson, Annette McCrea, Joseph L. Silsbee, Dwight H. Perkins, Augustus Saint Gaudens, and Gutzon Borglum, and its development has been influenced by the challenges, needs, desires, and dreams of the countless Chicagoans who have used it. This seminar will explore the fascinating history of Lincoln Park through three in-class presentations and three walking tours.

Julia Bachrach is an author, historian, and preservation planning consultant. She holds an MS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and she served as the Chicago Park District’s historian for 28 years. Her books include The City in a Garden: A History of Chicago’s Parks.
