Seminar Description

Dialogue in fiction signals a scene the reader can witness. It’s a tool that allows a writer to take seriously the dictum “show, don’t tell.” Used effectively, dialogue engages writer and reader, reveals character, and helps propel a satisfying story. Bad dialogue, on the other hand, can bog down fiction and turn readers (and editors) away. In this one-session seminar, we will discuss how to avoid common dialogue weaknesses and build better dialogue, while considering examples and trying out specific techniques. Beginning and intermediate writers are welcome.

One session. E - $80, L - $88

Linda Downing Miller has led creative writing classes in Chicago since 2015 and holds an MFA from Queens University; her short stories have appeared in Water-Stone Review, The Florida Review, Crab Orchard Review, Fiction International, and Fifth Wednesday Journal.
