Give Drink to the Sun: Life as a Nahua Ritual Specialist

Give Drink to the Sun: Life as a Nahua Ritual Specialist focuses on two ritual specialists from Mexico-Tenochtitlan: Kwaj Nochtli (d. 1521) and Kwaj Kowatl (d. 1521), who died during the tumultuous events of the Conquest of Mexico. At the time of their deaths both were in the particular care of the bundled Huitzilopochtli. The project reconstructs their births, their arduous training at their respective institutions (the telpochcalli and calmecac), and delineates the things that characterized them as elite ritual specialists. Their lives demonstrate that telpochcalli ritual spectacle surrounding war was an equal part of calmecac offerings that sustained the collective aspects of city-state ritual.
