Class Description
It's summer, everyone is busy, so it's the perfect time to explore short, short stories—better known as Flash Fiction (FF).
FF, generally works of 1500 words or fewer, might seem like the new kid on the block, but surprisingly has been around for centuries. From fairy tales to modern literature, Flash Fiction is a quick and convenient way to entertain while conveying an idea, feeling, or moment, usually with a surprise ending or plot twist.
We will examine the history of FF and look at examples from Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, Franz Kafka, and Zora Neale Hurston, to name a few. We will explore themes, structure, the elements that make up the four categories of Flash Fiction, and the oh, so important task of editing. Once mastered, these techniques will make your short, short story a work of art. And most importantly, every class will allow ample time for participants to share their own work with the rest of the class in a joyful and supportive environment.
