Class Description
The Alhambra fort and palace of the Nasrid rulers of Granada, Spain is one of only two completely intact surviving examples of medieval Islamic architecture in the world today. Join this class as we explore the vibrant plaster calligraphy and tile mosaics which make up this extraordinary building.
In this class, we will learn the rules of sacred Islamic geometry which make the space so enchanting. We will read poetry celebrating the Alhambra and listen to music from that time. We will explore the site virtually and also talk about its unique landscaped gardens.
Ms. Laurel Harig-Khan teaches courses on the culture, politics and history of the Levant. She received a Masters degree in Islamic Studies from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago and a Bachelors degree in Arabic from Bard College. She has been teaching at the Newberry since 2018.
