Celebrating the Holidays in Verse and Song

Ring in the holidays with hot chocolate, tasty treats, and performances by the Shakespeare Project of Chicago.

This program will be held in-person at the Newberry.

The Shakespeare Project of Chicago returns to the Newberry with a special program featuring holiday-themed poetry of both Renaissance and 19th-century writers and a selection of holiday music, directed by artistic director Peter Garino.

A choral staged reading, scored by Leica Wilde, of John Milton’s 1627 On the Morning of Christ’s Nativity will be followed by Clement Clark Moore’s 1837 A Visit from St. Nicholas and poems by Ben Jonson, John Donne, T.S. Eliot, William Blake, Louisa May Alcott, and others.

After an intermission during which hot chocolate and treats will be served, the program will wrap up with holiday music featuring solo and choral performances by actors from the Shakespeare Project.

Founded in 1993, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago has performed at the Newberry since 2003.
