Beginning Fiction: Writing Beyond Your “Real Life”

This six-week workshop is for writers of all levels who are interested in getting started with short fiction. We’ll look at literary short stories to understand how they start, progress, and finish.

Seminar Description

This six-week workshop is for writers of all levels who are interested in getting started with short fiction. We’ll look at literary short stories to understand how they start, progress, and finish. We’ll discuss how “real life” can fuel fiction and how to let your imagination roam, using writing prompts for inspiration. In the last two weeks, we will discuss participant work in a supportive environment and deepen our understanding of craft.

Six sessions. Registration – $210

Linda Downing Miller has led creative writing classes in Chicago since 2015 and received an MFA from Queens University of Charlotte. Her short stories have appeared in Chicago Quarterly Review, Water-Stone Review, The Florida Review, Crab Orchard Review, and elsewhere.

Required:

  • A free digital course packet of additional material, compiled by the instructor and distributed electronically before the seminar begins.

Recommended:

First Reading:

  • For the first session, please read "The Governor's Ball" by Ron Carlson and "A Sheltered Woman" by Yiyun Li available in the digital course packet (a digital file of these readings will be sent with the email confirming your registration).
