Members of the Society of Collectors and other special guests are cordially invited for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and a presentation about François-Louis Schmied (1873-1941) by cultural historian Neil Harris. Schmied is considered by some bibliophiles to be the greatest French architect of the book of the early twentieth century. Harris will discuss Schmied’s life, achievements, and works, as well as the collection of books by Schmied that he and his wife, Teri Edelstein, have acquired. Selected items from the Harris-Edelstein private collection and the Newberry will be on display.

This event continues the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the Society of Collectors.

Neil Harris is Preston & Sterling Morton Professor Emeritus of History and Art History at the University of Chicago and a Life Trustee of the Newberry.
