Class Description

The Chicago design landscape is vast and varied. This class will examine graphic design in Chicago through the lens of the “27 Chicago Designers.” Who were they—and why were there actually one hundred twenty-five?

By looking at the industries of advertising, printing, publishing, packaging, consumer goods, and more, we will examine how these designers helped shape the commercial landscape of the city through their work and the organizations they were part of. Examples from the Newberry's collection will tell a compelling story of the designers and the evolving aesthetic of twentieth-century design.

Andrea Villasenor, Senior Graphic Designer at the Newberry, began her career as a typesetter and has embraced continual learning and teaching as technology has transformed the field. She has taught at the American Academy of Art, The School of the Art Institute, and currently at Northern Illinois University.

All virtual classes are recorded and made available on a password-protected basis to participants registered in the class. These recordings are available for up to two weeks after the class ends.
