In September of 2024, eight current and former students at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) visited the Newberry to see and learn about the items on display in Making an Impression: Immigrant Printing in Chicago. In response, each student created their own broadside designs to share with exhibition visitors. The artist's statement below accompanies their finished broadside and explains the artist's style, approach, and intentions.
"Braiding Sweetgrass" serves as a heartfelt exploration of the intimate bonds formed through simple, everyday rituals—particularly the cherished moments spent with my Nani (Maternal Grandma) during the tender act of oiling hair. This piece stands as a tactile homage to the warmth and affection that infused those experiences, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia for the time I now long for while being away from home.
The work features rubbings of a crocheted braid, a personal creation that symbolizes the intricate connection between us. The act of braiding transcends the physical; it embodies the weaving together of memories, emotions, and care that bind generations. Each strand of the braid represents a moment filled with tenderness, laughter, and shared silence, creating a space where love is felt most profoundly. In these quiet afternoons, I would sit in the sun, feeling the warmth of her love envelop me, as we exchanged stories, wisdom, and the kind of comfort only a grandparent can provide.
The typography within the piece visually intertwines with the imagery of the braid, reinforcing the concept that our bonds are not only experienced but can also be seen and expressed in meaningful ways. This interplay between text and image invites viewers to engage with the work on multiple levels, reflecting the complexity of familial connections and the stories we carry with us.
"Braiding Sweetgrass" is more than just a representation of a memory; it is an invitation to contemplate the beauty found in the mundane and the profound impact of love and care in our lives. It serves as a reminder that even in our busiest moments, we can find solace in the simple acts that connect us to our loved ones. Through this piece, I hope to inspire viewers to reflect on their own intimate moments and recognize the enduring power of memory, connection, and the love that transcends distance and time. In a world that often rushes past the simple joys, I aim to capture the essence of these treasured experiences, celebrating the warmth of home and the bonds that define us.
