About the Award
With support from the Roger W. Weiss and Howard Mayer Brown Fund, the Newberry offers up to $8,000 a year to subsidize the publication of scholarly books on European civilization before 1700 in the areas of music, theater, cultural studies, or French or Italian literature.

Criteria
The Weiss Brown Publication Subvention award may be used for one of two purposes:
- To publish a work in a particularly appropriate way that would otherwise be prohibitively expensive. Examples may include special typography plates, images, or appendices.
- To reach a wider audience by significantly reducing the cover price of the publication.
In evaluating applications for the award, preference will be given to publications that:
- Are unique, unusual in concept or execution, or that diverge from the normal output of a given publishing house or entity; or
- Bring into print previously unpublished source materials; or
- Promise to reach the broadest possible audience for the type of book envisioned.
The Publication Subvention award is paid to the publisher. As a condition of accepting funds, publishers must include an acknowledgement of the award in the publication and provide the Newberry with a copy of the book.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through the Newberry SlideRoom portal. If you have problems with the portal, you can contact SlideRoom technical support or Newberry Fellowships staff.
The application may be filled out by the book's author or editor or by staff of the publisher on behalf of the author or editor.
The application portal for the 2027-28 fellowship year will open October 5, 2026. The deadline will be Friday, January 15, 2027.
Application Components
This section collects information for the primary point of contact for the publication subvention award. This is usually the book's author or editor, but might also be a staff member of the publisher. The person whose information is provided in this section will be the sole recipient of the results of the application review.
This section collects information about the book's author(s) or editor(s):
- Title and name
- Academic institution or affiliation. Please include affiliated academic department, as relevant. If the author/editor does not have an institutional affiliation, please enter "unaffiliated." Institutional affiliation is not required to apply for the publication subvention.
- Academic rank
- CV. Please use the following commonly accepted terms to describe any forthcoming publications:
- “in progress” - not yet completed or submitted
- “submitted” - currently under review at a journal or press
- “accepted” - contracted for publication; currently under revision
- “in press” - in the hands of a copy editor, typesetter, or printer
This section collects information about the book to be supported by the subvention. It asks for the following:
- Publication title
- Field of study: The academic field(s) to which this publication contributes.
- Publication abstract: This document should include the publication's title and summary, a detailed physical description of the volume, and an expected publication date. Maximum 2 pages, uploaded as a PDF or Microsoft Word document.
- Publication contract: Uploaded as a PDF or Microsoft Word Document.
- Reader reports: Copies of the reader reports on the manuscript or equivalent outside evaluations. These should be collected and uploaded as a single PDF or Microsoft Word document
- Production budget and schedule: This document should include the specific costs that the publication subvention award will be used for, as well as the publisher’s deadline for the receipt of funds. Maximum 1 page, uploaded as a PDF or Microsoft Word document.
