Newberry Reference Librarian Awarded Scholarship to IGHR

Jo Ellen Dickie

Newberry Reference Librarian Jo Ellen Dickie has been selected as the 2016 recipient of the Jean Thomason Scholarship. This scholarship covers the cost of tuition to the acclaimed Instititute of Genealogy and Historical Research (IGHR) at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama. Held in June, the Institute provides excellent courses in critical evaluation and use of genealogical sources and methodology through a week of intensive study led by nationally prominent genealogy educators. Jo Ellen will be studying African American Genealogy with a renowned constellation of instructors, including Tim Pinnick, Franzine Taylor, Ari Wilkins and Shamele Jordan.

As IGHR’s announcement notes, Jo Ellen is an expert on the Newberry’s Pullman Company Archives, whose employee records are a rich source for everyone searching African Americans around the turn of the twentieth century.

Congratulations to Jo Ellen! Come pick her brain to further your research. She regularly staffs our 2nd floor genealogy desk. Meanwhile, A Bibliography of African American Family History at the Newberry is a great place to get started.
