Civil War Lesson Plan Contest

The Terra Foundation for American Art invites teachers to create and submit an exemplary art, literature, or social studies lesson plan using the Civil War in Art website ( for a chance to win cash prizes up to $500.

The Civil War in Art Lesson Plan Contest is open to individuals nationwide who work or have worked as educators. The deadline for submissions is August 15, 2012.

To enter:

  • Download and complete the lesson plan template. Submissions should be developed for students in grades 4–12 and must draw directly and substantially from the Civil War in Art website. For examples of lesson plans, visit the Classroom Projects page of the website.
  • Save the lesson plan as a Microsoft Word document (or other text file); please do not save as a PDF file.
  • Submit entries, along with any attachments, via email to with the subject line: 2012 Lesson Plan Contest Submission.

A panel of historians, museum educators, and teachers will evaluate the lessons plans based

  • Quality and clarity of lesson concept and its relationship to artwork(s),
  • Accuracy of historical and art historical information,
  • Interest to students,
  • Use of website as part of lesson, and
  • Quality of writing.

Cash prizes of $500, $300, and $150 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place
winners, respectively. Winning lesson plans and honorable mentions will be announced in
December 2012 and published on the website, where they’ll be available to teachers worldwide.
