In this cooking demonstration and workshop, we will study, prepare, and taste early modern English recipes from manuscript and print sources. We will explore the background, methods, and meanings behind a few historic preparations for dishes inspired by summertime produce and learn about premodern food culture through reading and interpreting recipes.
One session. Registration – $85
Sarah Peters Kernan is a Newberry Library Scholar-in-Residence and holds a PhD in medieval history from The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on cookbooks in medieval and early modern England. She is co-editor of The Recipes Project and collaborates regularly with the Newberry.
Because this workshop is being offered online, participants will be able to select their level of engagement. You may choose to cook along in you own kitchens with any or all recipe preparations, or simply view the cooking demonstration. A digital course packet with recipes and accompanying ingredient lists will be included in the registration confirmation email.
There is no required reading for this workshop.
