‘To attain undreamed heights”: Latino Leadership in Local 1010, Latinos as Establishment, and Sadlowski’s Steelworkers Fight Back Campaign, 1970-1981, Emiliano Aguilar, Northwestern University

This chapter focuses on the role of Latinos in leadership roles of the United Steelworkers Union Local 1010 in East Chicago. The paper explores the administration of the first two Latino presidents within the local. Both administrations received criticism for corruption. As a grassroots movement grew across the union, culminating with Ed Sadlowski’s Steelworkers Fight Back Movement, Latinos served as activists rooting out the corruption and agents that facilitated these practices across the union. These claims highlight how Latinos utilized corruption to negotiate their inclusion, both as reformers and avid proponents of unethical practices.
