History of Capitalism Seminar

Dependency Theory and Other Tales about Capitalism from the Global South

As an intellectual history of capitalism from the global South, this book recasts the origins and scope of dependency theory as well as the political project of Latin American intellectuals in the global social sciences. Focusing on a transnational network of thinkers and intellectuals whose nexus was the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLA in English and CEPAL in Spanish and Portuguese), this book tells the story of how the intellectual project of cepalinos began as an alternative to liberalism in the 1940s and culminated as an alternative to socialism in the early 1970s.

Respondents: Gema Santamaria, Loyola University Chicago, and Ryan Jobson, University of Chicago.
