Rights and Reproduction FAQs

How do I place an order?
To Place An Order In Person

  1. Materials must be paged to the reading room before an order can be placed in person. When you are ready to make a request, the staff at the reading room circulation desk can help you determine the proper reproduction format to meet your needs.
  2. Staff will prepare an order form detailing the cost of your order. Please read the form and sign it.
  3. Place your order by bringing the order form to the bookstore on the first floor of the Newberry to make a payment.

To Place An Order In Writing

  1. Please direct all inquiries in writing to the Reference Department by email at reference@newberry.org or by mail. Telephone orders will not be accepted. Be as specific as possible about the item of interest, including the Newberry call number, if possible. Do not send cash or checks in advance. Depending on the complexity of the request, and the number of pending orders, it may take up to four weeks to receive a response.
  2. After your request is processed, you will receive an order form detailing the exact costs of your order. Read the form, sign it, and return it, along with your payment, to the Newberry staff member who sent you the estimate.

For All Orders

  1. The Newberry accepts payment via check, money order, or credit card. All checks from foreign banks must be drawn in US dollars at a bank affiliated with a US bank.
  2. Work begins when signed order forms and payment are received. Delivery times can be found in the listings for each service.
  3. Inquiries about the status of an existing order should be directed to the Reference Department at reference@newberry.org.

How long before I receive my order?
An order may take from a few days to several months depending on the size, complexity, condition of original materials, availability of source materials, and other factors. Contact the Digital Imaging Services Department regarding completion dates for various formats.

How may I pay for an order? For how long is the quote valid?
The Digital Imaging Services Department can accept a variety of payment methods: credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover), money orders (drawn on a US bank), and checks (drawn on a US bank). Quotes are valid for 60 days after receipt of the quote.

Will my request be subject to copyright laws?
The Newberry operates in full compliance with all United States copyright laws. The library also has specific guidelines and conditions for copying materials for libraries and archives and for individuals requesting materials. If we cannot complete your order because of restrictions, we will notify you in a timely manner.
