Founded in 1981 and based in Naperville, Fox Valley Genealogical Society serves portions of the Illinois counties of DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will. Meetings, held January through June and September through November, are at the Naperville Municipal Center, along the city’s river walk across from Naper Settlement, a local museum village.
The Society enjoys hosting a display at Naper Settlement’s Civil War Days each May. Visitors are offered an on-line look-up of their ancestor’s possible Civil War service.
The Society hosts an annual fall conference, held the last Saturday in September in Naperville. The September 29, 2012 conference is titled Ancestry.com and Beyond and will feature four lectures with Juliana Smith and Loretto “Lou” Scucs.
The Society is home to three popular and productive writing groups which meet monthly. Two of the groups focus on the casual writing and collecting of family history, traditions, and memoirs for their descendants. Originally one group when it formed in 1994, this lively group has split to accommodate the schedules of more members. One group meets in the morning, the other in the evening.
The third writing group became tagged as the (S)cholarly (W)riting (G)roup because the goal of its members is to publish the results of their research. Now popularly known as SWG (pronounced “swig”), this group has surprised itself with the success of its efforts.
