The 1905 New York state census includes the following information: permanent residence, name of each person living in the family as of June 1, 1905, relation of each to head of family, color, race, sex, age, birth (U.S. or foreign country), number of years in U.S., citizen or alien, if naturalized, when and where, profession, type of work (classification), inmates of institutions. Note: some counties include scattered returns from earlier or later censuses.
Unfortunately, the Newberry's 1905 collection is incomplete. There are no reels for Kings, Queens, Richmond, Orange, and part of Bronx.
Localities are divided into Assemby Districts (AD) and then Election Districts (ED). In order to search this census effectively, you need to know where your ancestor lived. (Unfortunately, there is no statewide name index for this census.) See http://www.nysl.nysed.gov/edocs/education/library/microforms/cardstad.htm for additional information on searching the 1905 New York state census.
Note: New York County (co-extensive with Borough of Manhattan) is arranged by Assembly Districts, sub-arranged by Election Districts. Also, the first New York County Reel begins with returns from the 1870 census.
