Naturalization Petitions: Soundex Search Request

The Soundex Index to Naturalization Petitions for the U.S. District and Circuit Courts, Northern District of Illinois, and Immigration and Naturalization Service, District 9, 1840-1950 (NARA film M1285) covers naturalizations filed from 1871-1950 in Federal courts in Chicago and from 1840-1950 in Federal courts in Danville and Peoria, IL; Hammond, IN; and Madison and Milwaukee, as well as county courts in eastern Iowa; northwestern Indiana; eastern Wisconsin; and northern Illinois.

Note: Prior to 1906, naturalization records contained little information of genealogical value. For more details on naturalization records, go to: http://www.archives.gov/genealogy/naturalization/naturalization.html

For $7, the staff of the Newberry Library will search the soundex index for one name. Requests must include both a first and last name. Because of the arrangement of the soundex, providing additional information about the individual you are researching will increase the chances that your search will be successful.

Please send a check or money order for $7 made out to the Newberry Library, together with the completed bottom half of the form to:
