The Newberry Library has a large collection of historical maps. Researchers can search the on-line catalog, the card catalog, the map catalog on the 3rd floor, and the atlas bibliography on the Newberry Web site for maps of particular nations or regions. One example of the kind of historical maps available is Antonio Garcias Cuba’s Atlas Geograpfico, Estadistico é Historico de la Republica Mexicana. (Mexico: José Mariano Fernandez de Lara, 1858.) Call # Ayer oversize G1545.G3 1858 – also available on-line through the David Rumsey Collection. However, novice researchers might be better off starting with basic geographical reference sources such as current atlases and gazetteers.
To locate works on these subjects, search the card and computer catalogs for the subject terms “Heraldry” or “Nobility” followed by the nation or region, i.e., “Nobility-Spain” or “Heraldry-Mexico.”

This index of church and vital records covers the period 1659 –1905. It contains approximately 1.9 million births or christenings and 300,000 marriages.
On-Line Vital Records Indexes This page of the Newberry Library Web site consists of links to on-line vital records indexes, including extensive birth and death indexes for California and Texas.
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City collects a wide variety of church and civil records from Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. The Newberry Library can borrow microfilm from the Family History Library for a fee of $3.50 per microfilm. To search the holdings of the Family History Library, check their on-line catalog. Select “place search” and enter the names of towns, cities, states, or nations. If you have questions about this process, please ask the genealogy librarian on the second floor.
