Sources listed in this pathfinder are strongest for the 19th and 20th century. To research Germans in this country, use the subject heading in the card catalog of "Germans in [location]". In the computer catalog, the equivalent subject heading is "Germans–[location]". When researching Pennsylvania Germans, use "Germans in Pennsylvania" as a subject heading in the card catalog; in the computer catalog, be sure to search both "Germans–Pennsylvania" and "Pennsylvania Dutch". Also, remember to search by the county as a subject heading and be sure to consult both the card and computer catalog by family name. Some other helpful subject headings in both catalogs include: "Germany–Genealogy" and "German Americans".
To discover records the Mormons have microfilmed, consult the Family Search CD-ROM set at the station next to the genealogy reference post and choose the Family History Library Catalog option or search this Catalog at www.familysearch.org. Through a loan program with that library, microfilm of German records can be ordered for use at the Newberry. The International Genealogical Index option includes abstracts from original records and is also available in CD-ROM or online.
