This guide is intended to assist researchers in locating census records at the Newberry Library. Items without a call number are kept on the open shelf on the second floor. U.S. Federal censuses on microfilm are kept in the second floor microfilm area. Statewide indexes to the U.S. Federal censuses (books and compact discs) are kept on the second floor near the genealogy reference desk. If you have trouble locating any items, please ask a genealogy librarian at the second floor reference desk to help you.
Items listed with a call number are held in the stacks, and need to be requested using a call slip. For instance, Canadian census microfilm is kept in the stacks, and needs to be requested with a call slip listing its call number (i.e., Microfilm 1064) and a reel number.
Readers visiting the Newberry Library can use the computers on the second floor to access the free internet sites and Ancestry.com.
If you are unable to visit the library and would like to request a search of the census, please look at the quick search service page of our Web site. If you have questions about materials in this guide, or general questions about the library, please contact a reference librarian.
