Throughout the year, the Newberry hosts a number of special events to raise funds to support the library’s collection and programs. Please note that dates and ticket prices for upcoming events will be added when they are available.
The Newberry Library Award Dinner
The Newberry Library Award, the highest honor that the Newberry bestows, recognizes achievement in the humanities in the tradition of the Newberry Library, which has cultivated the life of the mind across more than a century. In conferring the award at the annual Award Dinner, the Newberry honors individuals and organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the humanities, particularly in fields of endeavor related to the Newberry’s collection and activities. Past recipients include Dr. Carla Hayden, Librarian of Congress; Dr. Martin E. Marty, Fairfax M. Cone Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity at the University of Chicago; and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
The Award is presented at a gala dinner each spring.
Booked for the Evening
Booked for the Evening offers attendees a one-of-a-kind opportunity to interact with our librarians and curators; learn about the often unseen work they do; and bid on rare books and other materials to enable their acquisition, processing, or preservation.
The Newberry Book Fair, Chicago’s favorite used book binge, is held annually on the last weekend of July. Shoppers are invited to browse through more than 135,000 books in 70 categories, many of which are priced at $3 or under. Scour the sale for amazing deals on cookbooks, fiction, art books, children’s literature, history books, and much more. Admission is free and all proceeds support the Newberry. For information on donating books, please consult our Book Fair FAQ.
