Thank you for your interest in the Newberry’s collections and reference services. There are a couple of options for contacting Newberry staff for assistance with your questions. Please review the following information to select the most effective method for submitting your question.
Call the Reference Desk
The Newberry has two reference desks that are open during all hours that the reading rooms are open. Staff at the reference desks can assist you with navigating the Newberry’s collections and developing strategies for your research project. Librarians at the reference desk are happy to advise you on searching our catalogs and guides, planning a visit, obtaining a library card, and using our collections in the reading rooms.
Please call (312) 255-3506 with questions on non-genealogical research. For assistance with genealogy questions, please call (312) 255-3512.
Contact a Librarian
Most of the Newberry’s materials are housed in a climate-controlled stacks facility adjacent to the main library building, so staff at the reference desks will not be able to provide you with lookups and information on item condition or content on the telephone. If you have lookup requests, rights and reproduction requests, or complex research questions, please use our web form to contact a librarian. Due to our small staff and the high volume of inquiries we receive, responses to inquiries submitted via web form take an average of 4-6 weeks.
Although the Newberry welcomes your questions, our staff is not able to conduct extensive research on your behalf. If it is not possible for you to visit us to work with the collections, please consider hiring an independent researcher for in-depth queries or for genealogical research.
