A Supplemental Note

Unfortunately there has never been one standard library catalog subject heading for Civil War unit histories. Consequently, there are at least three subject heading patterns to check at the Newberry in the search for Civil War unit histories. The best route to go would in most cases be to check the Dornbusch bibliography (don’t forget the supplement volume!) and then make an author search in the Newberry catalog based on that citation. Even so, the thorough researcher will probably wish to check the relevant subject headings in the online catalog. Here are some of the patterns which should be covered:

United States - History - Civil War, 1861-1865 - Regimental Histories [or Personal Narratives]

United States - History - Civil War, 1861-1865 - Regimental Histories - [unit name] (e.g., “United States - History - Civil War, 1861-1865 - Alabama Infantry - 21st”)

[Name of state] - History - Civil War, 1861-1865 - Regimental Histories

United States. Army - [unit designation] (e.g., “United States. Army - Connecticut Infantry Regiment, 10th (1861-1865)”)
