Seminar Description

Arabic is the native language of over 350 million people worldwide. It is also the religious language of nearly two billion Muslims. This course is designed for complete beginners or heritage speakers who want to learn the basics of reading and writing in grammatically correct Modern Standard Arabic.

We will begin with the alphabet and the short vowel system of Arabic. After this course, each student will be able to read and write short paragraphs describing themselves, their family, the weather, food, places, and simple actions in the past, present and future. Lessons will also include cultural information and guidance for continuing student’s study of Arabic.

Ms. Laurel Harig-Khan teaches courses on the arts, politics, culture and history of the Levant. She received a Masters degree in Islamic Studies from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago and a Bachelors degree in Arabic from Bard College. She has been teaching at the Newberry since 2018.
