Seminar Description

Explore the fascinating geometric forms of Arabic--both typeset and handwritten--in a seminar exploringwill explore the rich history of Islamic calligraphy (khatt) in Arabic. From building inscriptions in the 7th century, richly ornamented Qur’an manuscripts, and textile designs and legal documents, all the way to modern digital versions of Arabic, this seminar will take students on a cultural and artistic journey through an extraordinarily rich heritage. No prior language experience is required.

Five sessions. Registration – $185

Laurel Harig teaches classes on the art, history, and culture of the Arab world, as well as courses on the Arabic language, at several Chicago–area institutions. She holds an MA from the Divinity School at the University of Chicago and a BA in cross–cultural communications from Bard College.
