Ben Jonson’s Poetry: The Humanist Poet and the Praise of True Nobility

Michael McCanles, Marquette University (Emeritus)

The goal of this course was an intensive exploration of all of Jonson’s nondramatic poetry in the following contexts: (1) the tradition of writing about vera nobilitas extending from classical times down through the Renaissance; (2) the history of the theory of epideictic rhetoric insofar as this concerns the praise of true versus false nobility (as distinct from virtue versus vice); (3) Jonson’s own career as he envisioned it: the achievement of the position of humanist advisor to monarchy and aristocracy.
