This course focused on the history of the book from about 300 to 1400, exploring medieval library catalogues, medieval manuscripts, and contemporary scholarship on manuscripts, libraries, and intellectual history. Some special topics that were investigated in more depth were: the book in Anglo-Saxon culture during the eighth century; the movement of texts and glosses during the ninth century; books treating disciplines of the quadrivium during the twelfth century; and books of hours. The course made use of primary documents in the Special Collections of the Newberry Library.
