10:30 am – 12:30 pm
The golden age of radio featured many genres aimed at younger audiences, dominating after-school hours and weekend mornings. These programs ranged from adventure serials like Terry and the Pirates and Captain Midnight to imaginative outings like Let’s Pretend. We will go back in time to explore early radio from the child’s perspective, including the Chicago-based Little Orphan Annie, the forward-looking Space Patrol, and of course the holiday saga The Cinnamon Bear.
Gwen Ihnat, a former editor at the Chicago History Museum, received her M.A. from Northwestern University and has taught several Newberry seminars on old-time radio.
