This seminar will consider ways of using literature and visual art from the period to discuss two very different kinds of frontiers in the United States of the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries: the rapidly disappearing West and the even more rapidly rising city. Through a discussion of short readings and selected images, we will talk about engaging ways to examine such materials with students as part of the development of a larger understanding of these two major cultural phenomena. Participants will also share with each other their own experiences in introducing students to these subjects.
