The Culture of Flowers
Jack Goody, University of Cambridge
This seminar focused on the appearance and commodification of flowers in medieval and Renaissance Europe, exploring the symbolic, aesthetic, and economic status of flowers as an aspect of the growth of capitalism. By contrasting the European situation with that in Africa, Asia, and the ancient world, Professor Goody provided a historical and cross-cultural perspective on the hypothesis concerning the uniqueness of Western economics and cultural assumptions.
