Dr. Phillip Stalley, DePaul University

This seminar provides an introduction to contemporary Chinese politics by exploring three key challenges facing the current regime: environmental degradation, income inequality, and economic reform. We will examine both the causes and the consequences of each challenge. Through a discussion of these three issues, we will address some of the more frequently debated questions about Chinese politics. Are the current institutions of governance sufficient to address the numerous challenges the country faces? Will China undergo a democratic transition in the foreseeable future? How stable is the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), which has governed China for more than sixty years? The aim of the seminar is to provide participants with both information and resources that can enhance their ability to teach about China, a rising power whose development will shape the course of 21st century history.
